I've been plugging away at Philip Yancey's "Soul Survivor" for quite some time now and I finally finished it today. I bought it before we came to Taiwan when I was feel a bit discouraged about things at Lakeview. I felt that this book might help me to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I tried a couple of times to start reading it but it seemed like it was going to be a tough read. About a month and a half ago I tried again and stuck it out for a couple of chapters. It got my attention and I finished it off. Yancey shares how certain people (King Jr, Ghandi, Tolstoy, Brand, Nouwen and others) have influenced his Christian walk and his professional life. I really learned a lot about some of these people and I am excited to read some of their stuff. I guess Yancey went through some tough times when he was disillusioned with church and Christianity. The people in this book helped him to find God outside of the church walls and they lived lives that taught him more about God. I have been challenged by the stories of some of these great people and I will now try to implement some of the lessons I've learned into my life and my faith. I recommend this book to anyone seaking to find God outside of the church and even if the impact of this book isn't profound to you, you will learn some cool stuff about these amazing famous people.
