I've been a little slow with the blogging because of the holiday season and our recent trip to the farm. But today I had to Blog because of what I experienced last night. Last night was Big Sugar's last ever show in Saskatoon and second last show period. They have one more tonight in Edmonton. For those of you that don't know they are calling it quits after that. I guess I've been into Big Sugar for awhile, I started thinking about it last night. I'm now 24 and I remember sneaking into a couple adults only gigs back in high school. So I guess I've been a fan for 8 years or so. I'm not always into their CD's but their live show is always a sight to behold. Last night's show was the best one by far. They played about 3 hours worth of music. Most bands probably give you about an hour and a half live with a fifteen minute encore. Big Sugar went for two hours solid last night and then added a one hour encore. Some of the highlights: Gordie's guitar playing (he was all over that guitar last night), the most harmonice ever at a big show (props to Mr.Chill), the reggae rapper guy that they brought with them, the girls that they pulled on stage to dance, Shawn Verreault (bad spelling?!?!) from Wide Mouth Mason cutting it up with Gordie, the band manager coming on stage and reggae rapping, the loudest most passionate version of OH CANADA ever with the flag on the back of the guitar as usual. Lowlights: my ears are still ringing...they are always so loud, and the opening band Train 45 (they are Mr.Chill's new country band) it was way to country for me and for most of the Big Sugar fans.
Now my friend Jeb who is a diehard Big Sugar fan opted out last night because of the venue: The Pat. If you don't know the Pat is kind of a cheesy meat market bar or at least that's the reputation. But I have to say I was very impressed with it as a concert venue. It had a great industrial feel and they had a dance floor but also some great seating options. I would definitely go to a show there again and from the sounds of it there will be many shows there. I was talking to a bouncer and he told me that they had a new part owner named Spero. Spero was previously the band booker at Louis when it was good and more recently at the Odeon but now that he's at the Pat most bands will be playing there.
Ok that's all for now cuz I gotta go to a New Year's Eve party. I hope everyone has a safe and happy new year....
