Today in my biography/autobiography class a group presented a book called “CAD The Confessions of a Toxic Bachelor” It was basically a male version of Sex and the City. A lot of discussion was sparked about university age sexual practices and behaviors. People discussed whether or not true love existed anymore, whether or not serial monogamy was realistic and whether or not the current promiscuity trends are good/bad or have long lasting effects. I mull these issues over a lot as I deal with teens and as I relate to my friends who live this way. As many comments led towards a continuing trend of promiscuity and experimentation being the “norm” for people under the age of 30 I felt the need to speak up in support of real love and genuine monogamous relationships. I asked the class if they valued the single life shenanigans as the goal or a loving/passionate relationship with the right person as a goal. Almost all of them pointed towards the secure monogamous relationship as the goal…so (as the only married person in the class) I challenged them to try and reverse the trend in their own lives and to go hard after the passionate real love that exists out there. It’s a snowball that is rolling out of control and if we want love back rather than just sex then people need to start making choices as individuals so that the trend as a collective starts to change…
