A summer of reading...

A couple of years ago I really got back into reading but my pace has slowed recently. I was an avid reader as a kid but reading lost it's fun when it was required so much in high school and university. I also found myself more and more glued to a TV screen or computer screen. That is especially true here in Taiwan as I work on my computer all day everyday. So this summer is about reading...I will be home in a place full of English books and I'll have time to sit on the deck, at the lake, by the river or at Starbucks and enjoy some good books. I'm not sure what I want to read and that's where you "my readers" come in. I need some suggestions. I'm into books from these genres: classics, biography, autobiography, fiction, Christianity and anthropology. I can think of 3 books I want to read:

The Secret Message of Jesus: Uncovering the Truth That Could Change Everything by McLaren (I've never read any McLaren...should I start with a different one?)
Henderson and the Rain King by Bellow (inspiration for the Counting Crows song Rain King...I've started it many times and never finished)
Oh, Play That Thing by Doyle (my favorite author and the sequel to my favorite fiction novel ever A Star Called Henry)

You have always been about owning the books, not actually reading them.
My suggestion would be SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED by David Shepherd, a copy is available in my library.

"Eat This Book" by Eugene Peterson is a sweet read. I am a little over halfway through the book now and will reading through it a second time.

as for some really intersting fiction, i'd recommend anything by Ted Dekker - his trilogy "Black" "Red" and "White" are completely engrossing (and not mushy romance girly stuff either - alternate realities, etc. abound in these books)

I agree with Glenn. Mark Buchanan is money and Blue Like Jazz is one of my favorite reads in the past year. Couldn't put it down.

I would steer you away from the latest McLaren book -- at least to start with, anyway. I got an advance copy of it a couple months ago, and haven't been that impressed.

I really LOVED his "A New Kind of Christian" series (a trilogy), and "A Generous Orthodoxy."

I'd say start with those before The Secret Message book. (this is coming from a pretty big fan-girl of his work, too)

"Shake Hands With the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda" Dalaire - Gov Gen. winner and tough to put down.

"The Woman in White" Wilkie Collins - The first great suspense thriller. Keeps you on the edge of your seat - great characters.

"The Last Crossing" Vanderhaghe(sp?) One of my faves and a great Canadian author.
